Summary
Aventurine has never been good at leaving abandoned things where he found them.
This time, the abandoned things are six freezing kittens in a box behind the station.
Unfortunately for Ratio, they are a package deal.

“...Dare I ask?”
“Sex curio,” Jade says solemnly, and offers no explanation beyond that. Not that that requires any further clarification beyond the ‘how’ and the ‘...why is that even a thing?’
He does have one other question, however. Just this once, he reasons with himself, he will swallow his pride for feeling the grating need to ask it.
“So, the good doctor—was he caught up in the crossfire, so to speak?”
“He was.”

“Hey, that’s—”
“You’ll feel far better when the menial tasks are out of the way.”
“Ugh.” Damn Ratio for being right. Aventurine knows he’s right. In any normal case, he’d give himself that very advice ten times over. After all, he didn’t make it to P45 by humming and hawing. “So, what's your smart plan, oh venerable genius of mine? Surely we don’t need all of these?”

Between a gaggle of cold-ridden cat cakes, a rare bout of burnout from an arduous mission, and the looming fact that he has to decorate for the IPC's belated holiday celebration, Aventurine finds himself inadvertently enlisting the upright Dr. Ratio for help. -

Summary
Sometimes, curled up in bed, when all he hears is the thrumming of ears left muffled from the high of a concert, he feels the somewhat grudging tug from the other end—a silent, ‘goodnight to you, as well.’ And then, if Aventurine chances one more cheeky pluck for good measure, he'll earn a firmer response: three tugs as if to say, ‘go to sleep’.

Aventurine has long been resigned to live his life in black and white, pulling on a soul-thread with no discernible end.
Sick of the yawning solitude of a life steeped in fate and fortune, he finds himself taking the gamble of a lifetime. -

Summary
Ever since Penacony, Aventurine has had this nagging feeling that he's fated to be ever in the doctor's debt. Had he even thanked Ratio for his dutiful performance back there? For offering his faith and wisdom where Aventurine was certain they'd be parting ways forever? Had Aventurine succinctly expressed his thanks for the way Ratio had single-handedly offered to oversee his care in the months following?
If Aventurine can even begin to repay that selflessness, he suspects that this mission is an adequate place to start.
—
Investigating a piece of technology on a distant planet, Ratio is struck down by a curse that renders him empty, grieving, and yearning for a closeness only Aventurine can provide.
