JJ’s world shifted the moment two thin lines appeared on the pregnancy test. Ever since then? Chaos.
In between swollen ankles and ridiculously early mornings spent at the foot of the toilet, Will left. He left quietly, without a fuss. No big argument. No explanation. He was there one week, then gone the next. He changed his number and left JJ a lousy, half-assed note. JJ didn’t have time to process it, too busy folding onesies and tending to a crying infant.
So, when Emily Prentiss decided to give her a hand, it seemed foolish to decline. Not when she hadn’t slept in days. Not when her apartment was littered with toys and bottles scattered across the kitchen.
JJ didn’t even realize when her eyes started softening when she looked at Emily. She didn’t realize when her heart made that jump around Emily. But seeing Emily Prentiss—usually sharp and composed —rock her baby with hands so gentle it made JJ hold her breath…it did things to her.
It did things to Emily too.

"Hotch said he called in reinforcements from overseas," Reid supplies.
JJ lets out a thin laugh unaware of where her thoughts immediately drifted to until the words tumble out of her mouth. “What, like Interpol or something?”
“Exactly like Interpol.”
At first, JJ thinks she’s having some kind of stroke. Or that, in fact, her alarm never went off, and she is still in bed, having a bittersweet dream about one of Penelope’s many plans and schemes. It’s more likely than the person behind her really being who JJ desperately wants, needs, her to be.
"Holy wow," Penelope whispers, grabbing JJ's wrist so tight she must suppress a wince.
Only then does she turn around, feels her heart leaping into her throat because Emily Prentiss is standing in the entry of the bullpen. She’s really here. In America. At the BAU. Less than twenty feet away from where JJ is struggling to not leap into her arms.

Summary
What happened in Paris was meant to stay there. It was a glimpse into another life, one that only ever brought them pain.
Over fifteen years later, Emily is being left behind. Lives are built, and she isn't a part of them. The mask she wears has slipped, her mortality is catching up to her, and it's easier to turn her back than to stand there and watch it.
JJ is still married. She shouldn't be. Her marriage has become a contract that she's too tired to leave.
With Emily pressing buttons, and JJ already halfway out the door, love, need, and anger rear their heads.
What follows is a series of terrible decisions, a vicious spiral they can't seem to escape, and a future neither of them dared to dream of.
