Summary
"Weren't there any nice men in Montreal?" his dad asks, and Shane stops smiling, stops breathing.
"Yeah," he says. "There were." He wants to ask if there were any nice women at McGill, or any nice babies at the hospital. Ilya's hand is on Shane's thigh, thumb riding just on the edge of acceptable positioning for lunch with his parents. He squeezes. "But none of them were Ilya."
Shane meets a nice man in Montreal. It changes less than you'd think.

Summary
The thing is, David’s pretty sure the kid’s living in a car. Or a motel, or something. Things aren’t good; he’s sure of that. He’s not the most observant guy, and he’s kind of shocked Yuna and Shane seem completely oblivious. Ilya’s twelve years old and wears a sweatshirt that hugs his shoulders far too tight, jeans that ride up past his ankles. He grimaces every time he has to force his feet into his shoes, clearly also too small. He absolutely, patently refuses to be driven home, and Irina never picks him up. He says he doesn’t know his mother’s phone number when Yuna asks for it; David suspects she doesn’t have one. And Ilya completely shuts down when someone mentions joining a hockey team.
Ilya and Irina find themselves in Ottawa in 2003. Or more accurately, the Hollanders find them, and never seem to let go.

Summary
At 12 years old, Shane demanded he be allowed to go to a week's International Exchange for Hockey wunderkinder. Whilst Yuna didn't want her baby to go, he'd long outgrown her motherly fretting, eventually she said yes.
And so, that’s how Yuna found herself in the airport being handed a Russian-English dictionary and one Ilya Rozanov.
