“What are you suggesting?” Nai mutters. Vash’s scent has changed again, it’s been fluctuating for an hour, dipping from pain, to sadness, to fear. Stomach plummeting scents. It’s driving Nai to insanity.
“I…have an alpha.”
“No-”
“Listen to me, I have an alpha that was hired on a few weeks ago. He’s strange. His scent is strong, but his file mentions a single rut when he hit puberty and then nothing else. I asked of course, thinking it was some kind of lie or misprint. Apparently he was started on a drug way too early that shut down parts of his system.” Legato sighs, Nai can hear him run his hands up into his hair, “it's a lot of medical bullshit, but I have it if you want it. Long story short, he’s an alpha with an all time low aggression.”
“So he’s a ghost?”

Summary
He doesn’t think about how Vash could have even managed to buy them both food and a room, and it isn’t until later that he regrets that misstep. He should have realized he had never actually seen Vash touch a single piece of food that entire night.
(Or, Vash starves himself to feed Wolfwood. Wolfwood isn’t too happy about it.)

They could finally catch a break. No one had recognised the Vash the second they entered the town, and despite the urgency of their (Vash's?) mission, a small vacation of sorts was due. Even if Vash's definition of "vacation" was running around and stirring up even more trouble.

Vash gets a stark reminder of everything he lost, and Roberto is there to witness his downfall.

Dark tufts of hair. Brown eyes. A tiny bump on the nose. Except for the plant markings flickering across the scrunched up face, the child wholly resembles him.
