Summary
Basically, the backstory is this: The Alternians arrived in Sol System during the cold war. On the one hand, they had superior technology; on the other, they were fleeing the complete destruction of their homeworlds. One short war later, we traded them Venus in exchange for technology transfers and 10,000 troll grubs, distributed evenly between the NATO and Warsaw Pact powers. They’re slowly Alterniaforming Venus; in about a thousand years (a blink in Condy’s eye) it’ll be suitable for habitation. In the meantime, trolls are allowed to emigrate from the fleet to Earth and plenty of them do.
