Summary
Al-Hashimi laughed again, almost mockingly. The mean lilt of it was so far removed from the emotionless, hyper-professional image Santos had built of Al-Hashimi in her mind that it stunned her into silence.
"I'm afraid you may have misplaced your faith," Al-Hashimi bit back.
In a rundown diner at five o'clock in the morning on July 5th, Santos loses one hero and finds another.

Summary
When Dr. Robby leaves Pittsburgh on his sabbatical, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi inherits his department, his board, and the particular problem of Dr. Jack Abbot - who keeps showing up, keeps saying exactly the right amount, and keeps noticing things she has spent her entire career making sure nobody notices.
She has managed her absent seizures since she was five years old. She has managed the weight of Dasht-e-Barchi since May 2020. She has managed everything, always, alone - because managed is the only thing she knows how to be.
Abbot doesn't ask her to be anything. That's the problem.
A slow burn in twelve weeks, two people, and all the things that go unsaid until they can't be.

Summary
Baran leaned against the threshold, nursing a cup of tea “Don’t overthink it” she said, taking a sip and making Jack jolt.
“What?”
The woman walked forward, letting herself fall on the armchair on the other side of the coffee table, folding her legs “Fitting in, belonging; don’t try to, it’s a draining goose chase” she explained “Just cut yourself a small place where you fit and stick to it”
Jack looked at her for a moment before snorting out a disbelieving laughter, which made her smirk “Thank fuck you are not a motivational speaker, Baran”
“That wouldn’t work with any of us anyway”
The former combat medic hummed in agreement “Too jaded?”
Too jaded, too sarcastic, too pessimistic for a bunch of good sentiments to be thrown at them with aggressive joy “Yeah”.
