Summary
Dennis wasn't a self-pitying person. Not at all. In fact, he tried his damnedest to see himself the way God saw him, with little to no care whatsoever. So no, these were purely logical questions. Dennis didn't deserve to be here; he was merely place-holding. So, in what sense would it be right for him to steal food from a hospital?
But he was so, so hungry. It was becoming difficult not to indulge himself for once, and Dennis was having trouble rationalizing why he should be allowed food.
Yes, his only purpose in life was to heal people who were meant to be here, but it wasn't like he was that good at it. There were others much more capable. Then again, there was no way he would be able to work with the hunger he was currently feeling. Five days with absolutely no sustenance created wicked ideology. He just hoped God could forgive him... If he were even watching.
Dennis already knew he was evil, so this line of thinking would just have to work.
โโIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.โ 1 John 1:9"

In other words, Dennis has the worst day of his life, and the religious guilt doesn't help one bit.

โCome here, kid.โ One of Robbyโs hands catches Dennisโs and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennisโs attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
โNope, donโt look at that,โ Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennisโs eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. โLook at me. Yep, good. Iโm right here. Youโre doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.โ
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennisโs face. โRobbyโโ
โI know. Itโs just Dana and Perlah. Weโre just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. Youโre safe.โ Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennisโs hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. โOkay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."
