He'll be there for Gaara, no matter what. It was scary almost losing him. Even though Gaara doesn't have the shukaku anymore, he still bears the pain and scars of housing the monster.
The pain isn't suddenly gone, it's still there. And Naruto– he wants to be there for Gaara. And– and he wants Gaara to be there for him too. Naruto is determined to help him through whatever this is, even if it kills him. Which, it probably won't, but y'know.

Picking up the pot, Gaara straightens, letting Naruto get a better view of the cactus. It’s green, plump, with flat pads speckled with clusters of tiny spines.
“What’s that for?"
“Oh.” He looks somewhat uncomfortable—it’s comfortingly familiar. One of the Five Classic Gaara Expressions that Naruto has come to memorize; a step below the elusive half-smile. “It’s for you.”
Naruto stares at it, then glances back up at him, searching for some kind of indication as to what the esteemed Kazekage is doing here on a random afternoon with a random cactus for him. He reaches no conclusion.
The first cactus makes sense. The ones that follow... Well, Naruto's trying to figure that out.

Fact 1: Gaara had agreed to a date—and Naruto made sure he understood it was a real date. The kind with just the two of them, no siblings, and no overly enthusiastic friends who would jabber on about the joys of youth.
Fact 2: Friday, Konoha Mountain Villa, 6 p.m. Right place, almost the right time. He was ten minutes early, and that was before factoring in that he’d been standing here in front of the hotel’s sign for fifteen minutes already.
Everything would turn out alright. Gaara wasn’t going to bite. Probably.
