Summary
What it was about the sea that called to him so was a mystery, but whatever such magic or hidden memory it was, it was powerful. There was no denying it. It was the only thing he was certain he needed: to hear the sea, to see the sea, to be here right next to the sea. There was an innate joy he felt in its presence. And not just joy, but peace; not just peace, but comfort.
On days like this one, it was clear to Gabriel that this was where he was meant to be.

“You left me,” he repeated. “Every single time—” Each word was punctuated by a hand gesture. “—you left me behind. Why—why—would I welcome you back with open arms?”

It was obvious. The way his leg gently bounced, the way he kept combing fingers through loose hair, the way he chewed on the inside of his own cheek—it was obvious. He was nervous. Scared, even, though such a word would never be uttered out loud, else a greater disaster might follow.
It was obvious, but also unusual.

Summary
The sun had disappeared by now, dropped below the horizon. Darkness was creeping in. Ludwig had already lit the lanterns dotted around—one outside each tent, lanterns in the tent, and a couple in the surrounding area that marked the border of their little village. Before long, he’d see his own breath. The stars would begin to appear overhead.
Out of instinct, Gilbert pulled his jacket across his chest a bit tighter. He was not a fan of the cold. Out of all of them, in fact, it always seemed to hit him harder. Why, he didn’t know. It just did. It always did, and it always sucked.

Summary
As court mage João's familiar, Antonio is accustomed to the stares. The rumours. To the court he's a demon in cat furs; a creature who bewilders the scholars and causes others to avoid him out of fear.
To knight-to-be Arthur, however, he is precious. A man worth far more than his oath to serve the crown.

Summary
The days rolled into months. Before Abel knew it, a year had passed. No amount of prayer could return what was lost. No procedure could rouse the still heart.
After that, the stories began. People spoke of a monster masquerading as a man, and came to fear the long, dark nights.

Summary
“When do you think he’ll be coming back?”
“Tomorrow,” Tauras replied.
“That was your guess yesterday,” irritation pulled Sigitas’s lips to the side. “Pessimism isn’t going to get us out of here alive.”
“We,” he almost laughed. “are not getting out of this alive."

Summary
When Prince Arthur appointed a second knight, João, Abel wondered if the man wished him ill. Why else would he be lumped with his perfect foil; a mischeivous flirt incapable of silence?
Day in day out João was there. Seasons passed and he became Abel's norm. Once-quiet nights were filled with João's chatter, same with guard duty in draughty corridors, and as the days blurred so too did feelings.
The prince-sent curse became a man worth working alongside. Someone Abel would notice, even miss, if he were gone.
