"Congrats to you and Qifrey, I guess, but it's a bit stupid to exchange hat ornaments." Easthies says, dipping his spoon into the dewberry pudding on his plate. "They're a sign of who your teachers are, after all."
"I don't meddle in your youthful pursuits, Olruggio, but I'd prefer you two choose another accessory to exchange if you want to show your relationship," his master says, his expression somewhere in between cautious and disapproving. "Your hat ornaments aren't really appropriate for that sort of thing, you see."
"So, Olruggio," Alaira says, grinning from ear to ear. "Any news you want to share with me? I'm all ears."
Every single person in the Great Hall seems to have something to say about this, everyone except for Qifrey. And Olruggio desperately needs any kind of explanation from his friend, because all these rumors are getting too much for him, and feelings he cannot quite understand are starting to creep into his mind.
or: Olruggio reminisces about the first of his many heartbreaks. It must be Coco and that kid's wee bracelets that pulled this memory from among the other dusty ones. Or maybe it's starry skies like tonight's that's making his heart bleed.

And of course there is an instant, after that first warm touch of Olly’s lips upon his own, where Qifrey feels a terrible tingling sensation within him and remembers his parasite. Where Qifrey remembers his silverwood, the tyrant that rules his body with an iron fist, and thinks, with a sinking sense of foreboding, that he is risking its awakening and his own impending death with this decision.
And then Olly’s hand flies up to bury itself in Qifrey’s hair. And then Olly’s arm wraps around his waist, and pulls him in flush against Olly’s chest. And then Olly’s tongue sears hotly across the seam of Qifrey’s lips, and Qifrey parts them for Olly’s entrance with a moan.
I love you, he thinks, and he remembers who the real tyrant is. The silverwood may one day take Qifrey’s body, but there's only one being in the world who rules his heart.

“Oh, Olly,” he says, his voice thick with emotion—the kind Olruggio has long since learned to ignore. It has become so familiar that it takes him a moment to recognize it now. So it comes as a surprise when Qifrey lifts a hand to his cheek, gently brushing his thumb across it.
Olruggio remembers what it is like to love Qifrey. It is in moments like these, when there is no oxygen left in his lungs, that he doesn't need to hold himself back, because any words would be nothing more than wind on his lips. He cannot let Qifrey hear them.
