    “Thank you,” he tells the lady.

    “No problem,” she grins. “Happy Spider-Man Day.”

    Peter blinks.

    He looks down at the hotdog. It has a little ketchup face drawn on it, and there’s a crisscrossing mustard pattern underneath that looks like a clumsy but enthusiastic attempt at a web.

    “Spider-Man Day?” he says.

    If Peter can’t fight or run, then the least he can do is quietly disobey. As long as he stays alive, he’ll find a way to protect his people.

    Too bad he doesn’t remember who they are.

    The Avengers have been infected, turned violent and aggressive against their will. And Peter, the only one unaffected, is trapped inside the Tower with six feral teammates.

     

    “Natasha,” Peter says cautiously, “what happened here? Steve attacked me, and if there was ever a sign that something was wrong, it’s having the embodiment of Truth, Justice, and the American Way throw you across the room—”

    Natasha comes closer, her stride controlled. Nothing necessarily out of the ordinary, but there’s something in her face, in her eyes—

    Natasha lunges across the space, and slams into Peter, hard.

If he’s down, now’s not the time to be alone in a battle.”

     

    “Before I do anything,” Peter said, hushed, “I need you all to understand that I’d do what you asked if I could.”

     

    “What’s happening?” Mr. Stark asked, immediately worried. Other voices chorused after, a blend of professional concern.

     

    Peter swallowed hard before firing a web to swing into the fray. “Cap’s going after civilians. I’m out of time.”
