Mike froze.
Then he was spotted, and the boy stopped in his tracks; with skillful movements, he quickly slung the rifle off his shoulder and pointed it at Mike’s chest. Mike raised his hands while trying to keep most of his weight on his left leg.
“Whoa. Hey,” Mike said, his eyes wide as he stared at the tip of the rifle. “Just hold on. I’m not—I’m not going to hurt you.”

It's 1993, and Mike doesn’t really know how to deal with adulthood. You could say he’s been a little depressed.
With Max and Lucas planning their move to California, the party stage a totally-not-an-intervention to pull him out of his isolation in Hawkins and Mike goes to stay with Will in New York.
Mike hasn’t seen his best friend in-person for almost four years. Will looks - different. Very different - and is that an earring?
It's kind of driving Mike crazy. To the point where he's dreaming of Will nightly. Yeah, those kinds of dreams.
Mike has no idea why this is happening to him - or at least that's what he tells himself.

Summary
They were finally free. The sky had returned to its natural blue, the ground closed up, and the fog of black smoke no longer hung over Hawkins. Mike had to keep reminding himself of that fact. Everything was perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
OR
Post season 5 fix-it, where everyone was Vecna'ed and the world did "end," and now they have to figure out how to get back home. But the way to get home might suck more than if they were to stay in the messed up, distorted version of Hawkins. At least for Mike.

A desperation seized Mike, but not one of escape. One that had come from deep within his soul, something that made his breaths quicken much more than Vecna’s tentacles. One that he’d experienced traces of numerous times: when Will had left for Lenora, when Will was back in the hospital after surviving the Upside Down. Even when he’d crossed paths with Will in the Wheeler house’s hallway. It was there whenever he saw Will.
Mike stared into Will’s eyes, taking a grounding breath.
And, for once, he let his heart speak.
