Summary
No matter where life took him, Daniel always had dead men breathing down his neck. He felt it every day, like he was the one man still walking among a pile of bodies. A ghost that hadn’t figured out he should lie down already.
New Mexico Territory, 1879.
Progress is coming, whether the land wants it to or not.Daniel Jacobi has bad luck and even worse judgement. Pulled back into the only thing he's good at, for a company that has no business being trusted, by a man he has no business trusting, he's balancing the guilt he's trying to outrun with the infatuation he's trying to chase. One of these days, he'll deal with how easily he's accepted the wrong man's offer.
Or the right one. He's still mulling it over.

Summary
There is a small number of available courses of action to take when you find yourself locking eyes with a hooded viper. A normal person might, for example, stop dead in their tracks. If they're smart, they would back away slowly, keeping the necessary eye contact to ensure the snake stays put from where it's hissing at them from. Snakes can bite even with their heads chopped off, fully. Something about their muscle memory. Or the brain still running after its connection to the stem had been severed?
Jacobi isn't really a snake expert.
(In which Daniel Jacobi messes up on a whim, and is now paying for it with his sanity. Warren Kepler gives him a framework of discipline and regrets it. After all, when a snake bites you, you start getting nervous even around lizards.)

Summary
Fireworks. That was how it felt when their fingers brushed. Jacobi had spent so much of the past year scolding his racing heart; he’s your boss for god’s sake (no, don’t think about how hot that is, behave, Daniel). It couldn’t work out, and he shouldn’t try. But after tonight…Jacobi may not have had a lot of relationship success in the past, but there was no way he was mistaking the way Kepler looked at him.
They had watched the fireworks on the hood of Kepler’s car, the weather just cold enough so that Jacobi could exaggerate a shiver and huddle up next to him. And Kepler had said 'rule number eight' for what must’ve been the tenth time that night, but he wrapped a warm arm around Jacobi all the same.
AKA Kepler takes Jacobi home after their fireworks anniversary.

Dave Bowman is calm. He’s not upset. He’s not panicking. He’s calmly, efficiently making his way to the ship’s logic core.
There is horror threatening to seep in around the edges. He’s in an airless ship with three dead astronauts and an insane computer. He just jettisoned Frank’s body into the depths of space. He’s a hundred million miles from home, and the communication antenna is broken.
But Dave has a simple objective. He’s going to get to the logic core and disconnect HAL.

Summary
If it were safer, I would have kissed you in the daylight.
East Berlin, 1964.
Warren Kepler, dutiful Stasi officer, lives in the static—recording dissidents, obeying orders, trying not to feel too much. Gray rooms. Gray rules. A life half-lived.
Then he hears the voice.
Doug Eiffel, brash American spy and pirate broadcaster, slips through the airwaves with jazz, sedition, and laughter wrapped in smoke. He’s everything Warren shouldn’t want—and everything Warren can’t stop needing.
What begins as surveillance becomes obsession.
Obsession becomes contact.
Contact becomes something far more dangerous.Across a city built on silence, two men risk everything for the sound of each other’s breath.
