Thank you for your service, Eddie.” The blond’s words make Eddie’s breath catch in his throat, and his fingers crumple the bills nestled between them, his mouth suddenly going dry. He’s been thanked for his service, and it’s always left a dim, sour taste in his mouth… but from this pretty boy bartender’s mouth?
Eddie has to take a swig of his free beer to collect himself.
“So,” Eddie says as his thumb rubs a slow path up and down the label of his beer, swiping through condensation, “Do I get your name, pretty boy, or is it only for people who order more than one drink?”

“S-Stop trying to butter me up, Diaz,” Buck grumbles, a little breathless. “It’s not working. You’re just going to have to wait for a taste.” Buck waggles the spatula in his direction threateningly, and Eddie slumps, grumbling softly as he keeps his head on Buck’s shoulders.
“This house is a nightmare,” Eddie grouses with no heat behind it, shaking his head as he brings his hand back to rest it on Buck’s hip, fitting his digits into the softness there. “Can’t even get a taste of frosting on my birthday. You’re a cruel, cruel man, Evan Buckley,” Eddie bemoans—he can’t even have a taste of his own cake on his birthday before they cut it later.

Eddie can’t fathom how Tommy could be so lucky to have someone like Buck and just not worship the ground he walks on, failing to see the miracle standing in front of him. He isn’t perfect, but he’s certain of one thing: he’d do better. He’d be so, so much better for Buck. He might not be worthy of Buck’s love, but Eddie can be a better boyfriend than Tommy ever will and he’s going to show him as if it was the last thing he’d ever do.

Since Eddie left, they’ve been talking non-stop every single day. This unsettling silence doesn’t make any sense – Buck is sure something must’ve happened. Eddie sounded so happy last time they talked because things with his son were finally getting better. There had been a real light in his voice, the kind Buck could recognize even underwater. So, he doesn’t know what might’ve made him vanish into thin air as if he were a ghost. It could be anything, and Buck is scared shitless. It’s a nightmare and Buck can’t seem to wake up from it.

“I can’t keep doing this, Eddie. Your sweatpants are in my dresser. You buy the right spices at the farmer’s market for my recipes. You wear the monstrosities I knit for you. You hold my kid’s hand when we’re crossing the street.”
Eddie’s lips are at the hinge of his jaw, like he’s testing the waters. It makes Buck brave enough to bring a numb hand up to one of the belt loops on Eddie’s darkwash jeans, thumbing there restlessly—sliding the tips of his fingers under the hem of his obsidian button-down. The skin-to-skin contact is all at once relieving.
“I think we’ve both known what we are for a while now,” Buck goads, hushed; tilting to arch his neck back against the wall, granting Eddie unlimited access, praying he takes the explicit invitation. “You’re my best friend. But this isn’t sustainable.”
