It’s as Shen Qingqiu crushes the last little fluttering Iridescent Gem Beetle that the mother decides to introduce herself by burrowing up out of the earth like a cicada the size of an elephant. He just barely has time to resign himself to an even more exhausting fight than the last one - with no rest point in between to chug stamina potions or anything! Honestly, what poor game design! - when the stranger appears.
He charges into the scene out of nowhere like an absolute bullshit deus ex machina, all dark, flowing hair and robes, whirling around to stab at the Mother Beetle with a gleaming white sword, making it screech and rear back in pain. Seriously, Shen Qingqiu feels like he’s suddenly trapped in a video game cutscene introducing the new companion! Where’s the background music and camera close up? Who is this guy?

Shen Qingqiu hesitates - he has told no one where he went. If she were to pull some trick on him… But Madame Meiyin is well known for her palm readings, and she seems quite serious. Clutching Xiu Ya’s hilt tightly with one hand, he approaches and lets her take the other.
After a long moment, Madame Meiyin sobers even more, the last of her playful amusement fading entirely.
“Child, how are you even alive?” she asks him in horror.
Shen Qingqiu scowls, snatching his hand back from her. “This master did not come for a lecture. If you know what is wrong, then--”
“I most certainly know what is wrong,” she says. “You have been starving for your entire life!”
