Summary
“Shane,” Ilya said. He sounded incredulous. “You think it's hard for me, having a beautiful man suck my cock?” His hand was on Shane’s face now, thumb pressing into the tender place behind Shane’s jaw, tilting his head up to meet Ilya’s gaze. “You think because I don’t get hard that, what, I do not want you?”
“No, of course not,” Shane said. It was just a change. Ilya’s body, familiar, reliable, the thing he could read best on the ice and off. “I mean, I know it doesn't mean anything, it's just the side-effects. It's not your fault.”

So.” Ilya shrugged. “It makes me feel— powerful. Crazy. Like I’ve done something very good to deserve it.” He exhaled, noisy. “I like that.”
“Okay,” Shane said, and then he couldn't look at Ilya anymore. He pushed his face into the dark space between Ilya’s neck and shoulder. “I love you,” he said. In English, first; then in Russian, shaping the consonants around his tongue, the first thing Ilya had taught him. When he did, Ilya shuddered a little, sighed, and then his hand came down to cup the back of Shane’s head. Held him steady, his big hand: sure on the ice, sure in this.

Summary
Shane coughs up a petal in Las Vegas, in a hotel elevator that’s going down.
He has his hanahaki surgery a month later. There’s no other choice: Shane doesn’t want to die or stop playing hockey, and Rozanov has made it perfectly clear, over and over, that they are nothing to each other.
But his post-surgery instructions don’t tell him how to keep playing in a league where Rozanov is still always there. Or what to do when Rozanov texts him before a game in Boston.

The first thing that people notice when they look at Ilya is the way that the word disappointment carves itself in jagged, angry letters along his jawline. This is not the worst mark he bears—it’s just the most visible.

This is how Rose finds out.
---
And there he is, Shane Hollander. Back against the rough brick wall. Ilya Rozanov, captain and starting center of the Boston Raiders is standing in front of him, close enough to cage him in. Close enough to kiss him.
The thought seems irrational for half a second, and then not so irrational at all, as Rozanov leans in and does exactly that, brushes his lips softly, delicately, against Shane’s. Shane sighs and opens to him, his body molding familiarly against Rozanov’s, broad chests crushed tight together.

“Did you like them? My parents?”
Ilya squints at him. “I love them,” he says simply, like it should be obvious. “They’re your parents.”
But, Shane thinks idly, there's a difference, isn't there, between loving them and liking them?

Ilya feels something like frustration, or maybe dread, in the back of his throat. “I understand what you want me to be. In your life. In your family. You like things separate, yes? Sorry, it took me so long to notice. I was trying to be something else, in the beginning. I understand now.”
“Ilya.” This time, Shane says his name differently, which means he’s caught the meaning of something he hadn’t before. “I don’t want you to—”
“Shane,” Ilya can’t hear the rest of the sentence. He thinks the rest of the sentence would haunt his nightmares for the rest of his life. “Stop it. It’s okay. I’m not upset. We can talk later, yes? You need to think about practice now. Meet the new rookies, give big Captain speech. I’ll still be here.” He can’t offer any other truths, so he offers this one: “I love you.”

Summary
Irina had put on her first pair of skates at age six. The boots had to be shared with both her closest-in-age sisters, but Irina could be willful when she wanted to be, and by age eight, Nadia and Katya aren’t willing to fight her for the privilege of ice time anymore. By age nine, people in town were noticing the way Irina cut through the ice, how fast she could spin, how high she could jump. By age ten, the owner of the rink approached her.
Fitness was the state religion in the Soviet Union, Papa used to say. Mama hated that; religion was religion, she’d huff. Irina had often thought of her mother as a product of a world that was dying. Still, she had still dutifully gone to Divine Liturgy on Sundays with the whole family, wearing starched clothes and sitting silently in the pews. Irina believes in God both as a habit and a conviction. She always loved church, loved the music and the ritual and the burning candles. But she had always loved being on the ice more. Even at a young age, Irina understood her body as a tool; something that could take her somewhere else.
Or, an Irina lives AU. An exploration of boys and their mothers.

“He is sick,” Ilya says. The dumbbells are abandoned in the middle of the room. Ilya’s back is against the wall, knees up by his chin. “He is sick, and I can never go home.”“I’m sorry.”
“Is not your fault. Is mine, maybe. I should not have—” he takes a shuddering breath. There is no end to that sentence. He should never have made eyes at a polite Canadian boy. He should never have turned that card.He has no family left, and soon he will lose Hollander and the lease he had on Hollander’s perfect family. Ilya is no stranger to starting from scratch, but he does not want to do it again.
Hollander sits next to him, skin warm against Ilya’s side. “Is he going to get better?”
“No,” Ilya says. “He will die, and I will not go back.”

“Grigori has never liked that Ilya plays hockey here," Svetlana says. "He has always wanted him to play back in Russia. When he hears about the Ottawa trade, he will be worse than before. You must not let Ilya do this, do you understand?”
“Would he?” Shane asks.
“Grigori is dangerous because he is persistent,” Svetlana says. “He wears people down. He makes them small. This is what he did to Ilya’s mama, and he now he does this to Ilya. Ilya can survive it because he is a world away. He will not survive it if Grigori is the only voice in his head all the time.”
--
Or: Grigori Rozanov never develops Alzheimer's. Even from across the globe, he maintains influence over Ilya, his career, and, unknowingly, his relationship.
Being told that they can't come out makes Shane speed-run being ready to do just that and tell the world that he loves Ilya Rozanov.

Jaw Man flicked his middle finger up at Ilya, who didn’t seem to mind, and gestured towards Shane and Hayden with raised eyebrows. “The f*** are you even doing right now, man.”
Ilya said briefly, “Orgy.”
“Uh,” said Shane, “no, that’s not—”
Ilya grinned at him. It was a mean-edged grin but something about it seemed to suggest that he was joking with Shane, rather than about him. “Oh, he speaks.”
“We’re not here for an orgy,” Shane said to Jaw Man. “We’re missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

He barely got any sleep. He spent the whole night thinking about killing himself. That sounds bad. He knows it sounds bad, but it is just somewhere his mind goes. When things are bad or when things are particularly good, Ilya thinks about leaving. If he feels anything big, he thinks about it. A little. Like a release valve or an escape hatch. His broken brain always presents it as an option to consider. As he holds Shane and listens to his breathing his thoughts bounce illogically between being glad he has never followed through and imagining himself jumping out of Shane’s hotel room window. In a detached way.

Ilya asked Shane’s father while Shane and his mother were talking outside: “Is boyfriends correct? Lovers is incorrect, but I am not sure what is correct.”
“Well,” Mr. Hollander said. “‘Lovers’ is usually used for, hm, a mistress or an affair. Something kind of sordid. Though--you would say Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers,” he said. He paused his knife on the chopping board. “Somehow that’s right and using it for real people isn’t right. English is a damn funny language, Ilya."
“Yes,” Ilya said from the bottom of his heart.

Summary
Getting information out of Ilya about his family was like getting blood from stone. Maybe harder. It had been one of the first things Shane had noticed about him. Any questions about his parents – the kind of typical things Shane’s mom had taught him to ask to make polite conversations – would result in brusque, emotionless answers or, worse, actual anger.
But somewhere out there was Irina’s granddaughter. The only remaining blood relative that Ilya gave a shit about.
And Ilya could never go back, which was Shane’s fault.
So that bothered him.
