“No.”
The response is immediate, reflexive and flat, and exactly what she had expected. Botan’s smile doesn’t waver. This is a familiar dance, one she knows every step of.
“You haven’t even heard what it is yet.”
“I don’t need to.”
“You’re going to at least listen. It’s a retrieval, more delicate than dangerous. A fugitive you’ll find irritatingly familiar.”
“My parole is up.” Hiei’s eyes narrow. “Koenma thinks dangling familiarity will make me agree?”
“No.” She leans a little closer, letting her breath fog in the space between them. “He thinks sending me will.”
When Botan tracks Hiei down during a winter storm with a request from Koenma, she expects resistance. What she doesn’t expect is the familiar quiet that settles between them—shared warmth, shared hunger, and the unspoken truth that agreeing has very little to do with the mission at all.
