It was red, leather bound, and it had a golden symbol on the front cover. Gerard opened it cautiously, mostly out of fear that the pages would fall or crumble with age, but there was only dust in between them. The first page read "Property Of" but the name had been torn off.
"Gerard, you sh-"
The next page read 'Gnomes'.
"Mikey." He flipped the pages quickly. The pages quickly became darker, frantic, even with just a glance Gerard could tell something was happening to the author. "This is- I can't belie-"
One of the pages made him stop. There, in big letters, more than half way through the book, read: 'TRUST NO ONE'.
......Gerard and Mikey spend a summer in the small, definitely not haunted, town where their Grandmother lives.

The empty streets look infinite, waiting for long evenings and late mornings. Sprinklers waved their water in lazy arches, greeting them before falling onto freshly cut lawns. The spray hits the pavement with soft slaps, pooling into puddles before disappearing into the cracks of the sidewalk. The end of the world smells like dust and asphalt, like the air before a thunderstorm. The end of the world is beautiful, and that’s the worst part.
