Summary
Zuko opens his mouth to speak. To yell, to put a name to what they’re doing; murder. Abandonment. Slaughter of fresh cattle. He cannot simply sit and listen to this wake of beasts plan to take away these loyal fathers, sons, brothers. The warm air on his dry tongue is bitter, and the cacophony of noise in his mind makes it hard to find the words, but he stands anyways.
And then he bows.
Zuko is thirteen, and he does not speak out.

Or: An alternate universe where Zuko manages to hold his tongue in that war meeting. He does not fight his father in an Agni Kai, does not get banished with only half a face and a ghost story to track down.

Summary
Harry gets the letter inviting him to return to Hogwarts during a normal, calm breakfast with the Weasley’s. It’s a shock, it’s enthralling, he agrees in a heartbeat. Second to only Hermione, who already has her response sent by the time Harry realizes Ron’s hesitant. The three of them return all the same, Harry himself ecstatic at being back home.
Until he realizes the dorm situation is… different.

Not the metaphorical kind. The feeling of loss, of shame, guilt; that pit in your stomach that seems to just grow wider and wider. When it feeds off of your tears and grows so large it starts to turn from a hole and into an imploding star. Swallowing every happy moment you’ve ever experienced, chewing it up, and spitting it out covered in insecurity-flavored saliva.
No, not that kind.
Have you ever had a hole in your chest?
A literal, gaping, bloody hole. The kind that comes served with a side of agony so blinding you heave, turning on your side and spitting up every drop of booze you drank hours prior. Maybe days. Only you can’t, because there’s a hole in your chest.
