The first time Ellie ever sneaks out in Jackson–the first and hopefully the only time because she already feels like she’s developing a fucking stress ulcer from the guilt before she’s even actually done it–she has about half a dozen heart attacks on her way out. She doesn’t think the house has ever made as much fucking noise as it does as she pads softly down the hallway in her socks, boots held in one hand and her backpack in the other. She cringes at every creak in the wood and glares at the floor like it’s personally sabotaging her.
She grits her teeth so hard she might be damaging them as she creeps past Joel’s door, left open like always as a signal that she’s free to get him if she has a nightmare. It’s sweet, and she normally appreciates it.
Right now, though, she wishes he were a bit more of a heartless bastard about her needing him.
The sight of Joel in bed, fully asleep and not remotely suspecting what she’s doing, almost makes her call the whole thing quits. He’s going to be upset, she knows, about what she’s doing.
She’s just hoping the pride will offset the mad.

She’s a good kid, has a solid head on her shoulders, but she’s still learning, and even with the trainees paired off with an adult, shit happens.

It’s a bit like trying on an old jacket, settling into Jackson. The general shape of it is familiar, even comforting in its own way, but there’s an adjustment period, a little breaking-in until everything fits like it should.
Well, it’s like an old jacket for him. The way Ellie looks sometimes, completely bewildered and turning to him for reassurance or clarification, he thinks it’s a bit more like trying on a Halloween costume for her.
Tommy and Maria had brought them their meals at first, and he’d at least been gratified to get some real food into her. After Silver Lake, she’d been off all meat for a long while, and in the hospital, exhaustion and pain had stolen what little appetite she’d managed to recover by that point. There’d been a little adjustment period here in Jackson, when they fell back on their routine of him taking bites of meat first to reassure her they were safe, but she’s slowly begun building back some flesh on her skinny little self, and it’s like he can feel a bit of his own restlessness settle with each plate of cheesy potatoes she downs with relish.

When she takes the first cup of warm cider at the harvest party from a boy a year ahead of her at school named Daniel, she wrinkles her nose a bit at the first sip. It has a sort of burn to it, and she rubs her tongue against the roof of her mouth, feeling it out. She takes a second sip, trying to determine what it is, but against sweet apple and spices, it’s hard to pick it out.
“What’s in this?” She asks him, as he hands two other kids cups of the same stuff.
“That’s some special juice,” he says with a wink. The emphasis is clearly supposed to mean something to her, but she can’t fathom what it might be beyond the simple fact that it’s hot apple juice with stuff in it. She thinks she heard someone call in nulled, but that doesn’t mean anything to her, and Joel isn’t here to explain it.

Thankfully, adults tend to look only at adults first, so she has a moment to recover before-
-but no, Tara is looking at her, only at her, with an intensity that makes her feel uneasy. Immediately she presses a bit tighter to Joel, who looks down at her before looking back up to Tara, frowning a bit. He shifts Ellie a bit, getting her just slightly more behind him before he extends his hand, breaking Tara’s unnerving stare with a blink as she registers it in her field of vision.
“A pleasure,” he says, and Tara fumbles for a moment before she takes it, even as her gaze flits back to Ellie briefly.

When Joel calls his name and comes jogging towards him in Jackson, pulling him into a hug as fierce, as joyful as the ones he got when he was back on leave during his army days, he thinks, Is that all it took? I just needed to leave him alone to let him heal? I could’ve just fucking ditched him and then gone back? It’s a painful thought, that his own attempt at support just hindered Joel’s healing, but it’s a giddy one, too, the idea of his brother back with him.
Then he sees Joel catch a kid who almost falls off of her horse when she dismounts, the motion as easy and thoughtless as if he were-
Oh, he thinks, when he sees the way the girl looks at Joel, all sass and no regard, clearly not afraid of him in the slightest, the way she uses his personal space as her own without a second thought. Oh, you paternal fucker.

She thinks it’s a joke at first when she finds out that Joel’s a patroller, too. She’s a veteran, so it was a simple thing for her to be assigned to the work as well, but the idea of gentle, loving Joel with a gun in hand, fighting and killing, is almost laughably absurd.
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who spends hours on the porch with his daughter patiently teaching her guitar and think “yes, he’s good in a fight.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who regularly scoops up his fussy nephew and soothes him with an experienced parent’s deftness and think “yes, he’ll absolutely kill without hesitation.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who lets his teenager manhandle him to steal his food right off his plate because it makes her laugh and think “yes, he’s ruthless enough to take out a threat.”
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at Joel Miller and think he’d be a good patroller, and day by day, she worries about it more and more.
