“I thought that I could… It could make me feel more in–in control I suppose, but it's…” Arthur let out a horrified breath. “It's wrong. I keep just… Stumbling and, and losing everything and—”
“You haven't lost me, Arthur,” John murmured, pulling one leg up on the bed to fully face Arthur. “Come here.”
With a bit of help from John, Arthur sat up, and John embraced him tightly. He felt Arthur's hands on his back, careful, like it was the first time they were close. John hid his face in the crook of Arthur’s neck, taking in Arthur’s smell and warmth. He pressed his lips softly to the skin to feel his pulse under his lips.
It was still so new. And yet, so familiar.
“I love you, Arthur,” John whispered into his neck. “I love you.”--

Summary
As long as he’s known Arthur – as long as he’s hated and tolerated and liked and loved him – John has wanted his own body. An identity all his own. When he and Arthur find a way to make it happen, it should be perfect. It needs to be perfect. But Arthur still can’t see, and John makes some unfortunate discoveries about his new body, and they’re both having a hell of a time of it. They aren’t alone, but it’s hard to remember that when you don’t share the same moral frame anymore. Hard, but not impossible.
Written for the 2023 Malevolent Big Bang!
