Hermes is usually good at telling when people are lying or hiding something, but he can’t tell if the words are genuine or not; if his father really would be devastated. The threat is real, though. He doesn’t doubt that.
How could Zeus make a threat sound so kind and loving?
OR: It takes six months to drain Apollo’s immortality before his fall from Olympus. Hermes sees something he wasn’t supposed to.

A few years ago, Ares had helped Kronos steal the Master Bolt. On most days, this would have incurred the full wrath of Zeus, but the old king was too busy flaunting his returned mega-weapon and bragging about how he could have easily beaten Poseidon had he wanted to. Ares' fruitless betrayal was quickly forgotten, and he got off with no more than a slap on the wrist.
Then I, the fabulous Apollo, went and started the second Gigantomachy. After that, Dear Old Dad decided that he'd been far too lenient in the past.
Seriously, was it not enough that I was stuck in a flabby mortal meatsack with teenage hormones and acne? Why did I have to share my fate with my bullish older brother?
An AU where Ares is made mortal with Apollo because he sided with Kronos in TLT. Three snippets across three ToA books as Ares and Apollo learn to do more than tolerate each other.

Then it pauses. Its carapace lowers. Despite having no eyes or facial expression, it gives off the distinct feeling of glaring.
