Summary
In September 2004, at the beginning of senior year, Shayne Topp decides he wants to add another academic activity to his college resume to make his application stand out more to college boards.
At the same time, Chanse McCrary needs to get his grades up, or else he'll be booted from the football team.
So, when Shayne starts tutoring after school, he's quite annoyed to see Chanse needs his help. Against his better judgment, however, he figures he'll just tough it out and tutor Chanse for the sake of getting the credit.

Cameron does not want to go to a Halloween party. He wants to continue his and Ferris's tradition of buying a shit ton of candy and watching horror movies until they pass out curled up in each other, limbs intertwined and minds muddled enough with tiredness that they don't think about waking up with shirts off and jeans down to their ankles. Ferris, however, does want to go to a Halloween party, because it's Sloane's and he doesn't want to leave his girlfriend hanging—he tells Cam that the tradition doesn't matter that much, really, and they can just do it after Halloween—the candy is cheaper, then, anyways. Cameron pretends that doesn't sting.
(or: halloween parties and kissing in the bathrooms of them always tends to yield interesting results!!)

Patrick’s seconds away from breaking down, from throwing the briefcase out the window and praying he’ll never see it again. He’s moments away from slamming it shut and tossing it in the ocean. He’s breaths away from calling his mom and asking her to come get him because he’s honestly scared for his life.
All of these thoughts disappear with the simple sound of Pete breathing next to him, letting out a breath that could pass for a laugh. Patrick wants to look over at him, to grab him and ask him to fix this. Pete, though, is already ahead of him.
“Well,” Pete says, tossing an arm over Patrick’s shoulders and drawing him close. It’s a simple act but it puts the younger boy at ease. “They want us to be defenders? Awesome. At least they know we’ll go down swinging.”

The hiatus was something that was supposed to give them time apart from each other, to calm down and relax from the tension. But a briefcase might be enough to dash all those plans.
