There is a quiet truth among spies: saving the world is the easy part. There’s a rhythm to the work, a set of rules to follow without deviation. Put all else aside. Leave no-one behind. The only life that doesn’t matter is your own. Existing in that headspace for however long required isn’t simple, but time and practice make it easier. Like holding your breath, you can train yourself not to want or need anything other than the mission. A little longer each time.
Eventually, it’s breathing again that’s difficult.
