Ilya was 12 the first time he thought it. Standing at the foot of his mama’s grave, watching as they lowered the coffin down. The air was cold around him. Her cross on his chest even colder. His father’s hand rested heavily on his shoulder. And the thought popped into his head unbidden.

He let it sink in, rolling the words over and over, silently considering them. His mama had never before gone somewhere without an invitation to follow. His whole life, she had turned to him with a wide smile and his favorite question, “Ilyusha, would you like to join me?”
