Summary
“I waited for hours. It’s a dumb choice to keep a prince waiting…” He grabbed Duncan firmly, now face to face, without the armor the warmth passed through the light fabric. Blue eyes met purple ones in the darkness, a desire as strong as the fire swaying in the hearth. “And you know how I hate waiting.”
“I already apologized,” Duncan finally said, his voice low but laden with something Aerion already knew well.
As if a spark had fallen into wildfire, heat filled the chamber. In one pull, Duncan tangled himself with Aerion, fingers curling into his silver strands and lips pressed together, moving with a shared hunger.
(Or, Aerion stays up late waiting for one of his daily visits.)

Summary
He looks at Aerion, resplendent and armed and entirely without need of him, the small, priceless, dark, glittering jewel burning cold at his ear and his throat bare and unclaimed above it, and he thinks that of all the shining company gathered in this hall, the one thing not a soul here has the least use for is the one thing Dunk knows how to be.
(Or: Aerion is confronted with a new Lyseni suitor, and Dunk is confronted with all the things he cannot provide. Readable on its own but best read after the first part of this series.)

Summary
"Glad." Aerion turns the word over the way a man turns a coin of uncertain mint, hunting the flaw in it. He finds none, which Dunk can see plainly does not sit well with him, and settles for the sly mocking Dunk knows he turns to now when unmoored. "I have spent the better part of the day labouring on the birthing bed for your oversized spawn, in such pains as you cannot and will never be able to fathom, and all of it is that you are glad."
(Or: Aerion, Dunk, their secondborn, and the surprising capacity of family. Better read after the first part of this series.)

Summary
Dunk says nothing.
The not-saying costs him. He can feel the words crowding up behind his teeth, the foolish desperate words, and what of this, what of me, what of the dead candle and the unbarred door, and he holds them, because he knows what they are worth, which is nothing, less than nothing, they are the kind of words that end a thing like this, and Dunk has discovered in himself a cowardice he did not know he owned, which is that he would rather have the fire on these terms than not have it at all.Series
