Zoya flattens her hand on his head and shoves it sideways. “Shut up.”
The slow grin on Nikolai’s face is too irritating to look at. “I fear you will have to kiss me again,” he says.
They hear the footsteps in the hallway a second before the knock.
For the last several years, Zoya has been widely assumed to be Nikolai Lantsov’s lover. Now that she actually can be, every force in existence seems to have resolved to stop her.

He didn’t really want to say it. But he’s doing what he has to. Zoya was never going to like it.
She says, “As if I wouldn’t follow you. Someone needs to talk you out of exactly this kind of nonsense.”
Of everything Nikolai could be afraid of, this is somehow the worst of it. He needs to get a grip. He takes a breath and says, “I wonder sometimes if it would be better. If you didn’t work for me.”
The day before you probably, most likely, almost definitely get forcibly removed from your job, or at least put on very strict notice, is just about the worst time to make moves on the coworker who’s been by your side this whole time. Which is why Nikolai Lantsov has no choice but to try it.
