A phantom of the gunshot ricocheted in the bag, and Ren’s hands flew up to his forehead. He could feel dried blood on his forehead and a pit where the bullet had burrowed into his skull. Somewhere deep in his brain laid that bullet, nestled among the whorls like a swaddled infant. He’d failed to sway Sae, and Akechi had shot him. Despite all the efforts of the Phantom Thieves he had still died in that interrogation room.

“It’s just an interesting choice,” Akechi said. Still pleasant, but something cooled his tone. “Did you know certain types of flowers are overrepresented in hanahaki infections? The most common flowers are roses, but carnations are also frequent.”
“You think I have hanahaki?”
Akechi barked out an unrefined laugh. He must have found Shido’s question genuinely funny, and something about that delight made Shido bristle.

The threat meant nothing, because what Akechi really wanted was for Shido to put a bullet in his head and free him from this perverse torture. He’d at least been a guard dog before the election, back when threats to Shido’s power lurked around every corner. But now he was nothing more than a pampered, coddled lap dog.
Akechi hated it.
“Then do it,” he said. “Go ahead and do it already.”

“Okay, well Friday might work. I’m Ann, by the way. I’ll bring one of these guys with me.”
Her voice echoes, drawing Goro’s attention away from this mysterious stranger. Only to be brought back a second later when he says. “I’ll come along.”
“Oh. if you insist,” Yusuke says flatly. He always does hate anyone stifling his creative process.
But Ann does seem to be uncomfortable with going alone, which he can perfectly understand. “I’ll be using the studio on Friday as well.”
Yusuke gives him an odd look; he doesn’t normally stay after school on Friday, but happenstance has it that his mother is busy so their weekly dinner is moved to Sunday.
“Great, we’ll see you then. Oh, I’m Akira Kurusu,” says the dark haired boy, who smirks just a little at his own introduction.

Goro doesn’t even get a chance to complain before Kurusu is sliding an arm around his back and beneath his knees. He’s immediately greeted by a wave of pain that outclasses all the others before, a kind of pain that makes him feel as if his entire body is breaking in two. Makes him think: fuck, maybe it actually is.
He grits his teeth. “Joker, stop.”
Kurusu instantly freezes, meeting his eyes with clear alarm.
“What’s wrong?”
“I think my hip might be broken.”

After their duel, a chance encounter with the Reaper has disastrous consequences for Goro and Akira. Trapped together and left to their own devices, it's going to take more than luck to get them both out alive.
