The door snaps against its chain, wedge of light from inside showing very little except for John’s hand braced against the frame, and a fragment of his face.
“Yeah?” he asks, rough and tired. Gale swallows.
“What, not even a ‘hi’?” He tries to drawl it out, but his heart is punching all nervy through his core, and it’s making his words wobble. The door slams shut.
There’s scrabbling, metal on metal on wood and frantic hands, and then the door is all but gone, thrown wide to let all the light out and frame John, standing there in sharp relief.
“Hi,” he says, and his face splits wide. “Hi,” he repeats, and he’s reaching for Gale. “Hi,” he breathes, and it’s into Gale’s neck. Gale wraps his arms around John’s back, tucking a kiss behind his ear. “How are ya? How was your flight?”
“Are you surprised?”
“I’m dreaming. Hi, baby.”
