Mo Ran stirred beside him, his voice muffled but warm in the quiet of the cottage, “Shizun… did you have a nightmare?”
The words struck Wanning like a bolt of lightning. Shizun? The title felt both familiar and out of place in this strange reality. He tried to speak, but his voice caught in his throat, his mind still tangled in confusion.
Before Wanning could gather his thoughts, Mo Ran’s arms were around him, pulling him close. The warmth of Mo Ran’s body pressed against his own, steady and grounding, and Wanning found himself sinking into it, almost as though the act of being held could make sense of the strange feeling in his chest.
“Don’t be afraid, Shizun,” Mo Ran whispered, his voice soft, his breath warm against Wanning’s ear. “I’m here.”
