The face is different. Older. The streak of white hair in the black is new, but the unruly curl of his bangs is all too familiar. The man on the ground is young, still, but what a difference four or five years makes on a face that looks barely even twenty.
"Get— Get away," the man snarls, thick and choked.
The voice is deeper, come into its own, but that Gotham-streets accent is unmistakable.
Bruce finds himself kneeling, breathing, "Jason," without thinking about it, for once in his life.

Just fucking fuck. Dick didn’t even do anything, so what the hell is wrong with him, spazzing out at nothing, at his first chance at a little fun. He imagines what he must have looked like through Dick's eyes and can vividly picture what he saw: Jason acting so scared and helpless and weak and stupid and—just—fucking —Goddamnit.
Or, Jason isn't sleeping, Dick doesn't know what to do, and Tim just doesn't want to get shot at (again).

Bruce murmurs into the dark stillness of Dick’s pristine bedroom, “Whatever you want.”
As rich as Bruce is, Dick doesn’t think that's quite true. If Dick was free to ask for whatever he wanted, he would ask to go back to Haly’s and see his parents waving at him from the trapeze. But neither Bruce Wayne nor the Batman can make that happen, and that’s not helpful to anybody right now. Instead, Dick curls up with Bruce and listens to the steady heartbeat of his new life lull him into a dreamless sleep.
When he is nine, Dick leaves the spotlights, takes Bruce's hand and goes into the darkness.
“You mouth off to Batman like this? Or do you do this to everyone?” Slade chuckles, “Your teachers must love you.”
Robin tilts his head, “What teachers? Batman teaches me.”
“You know, the teachers at whatever godforsaken school you attend.”
“Oh.” There’s a flat tone to Robin’s response that has Slade twisting to look at him.
“You do go to school, right?”
“Uh.” Dick blinks, realizing he’s in a bit over his head. “Yes.”
“Really.” Slade says, equally flat. “Tell me when spring break is this year then.”

Loki looks up, incensed, but whatever he sees on Thor’s face makes him stop to reconsider. After a long moment, he obliges.
"I will not mourn them." he says slowly, as if savoring the resentment of for once being compelled to speak. "All they ever did was take you away from me."
