Wei Wuxian laughs as if it’s a joke, although the man’s stony expression makes it clear that any humor gleaned from him is likely unintentional.
“Well, uh, I appreciate your,” Wei Wuxian says, “you know, time, but everything is under control here, actually.”
With impeccable timing, a tea-kettle sound keens from the kitchen, followed by a contained bang.

“Qi-” Agula faltered. She’d really almost answered with “Qiyan Agula”! This Nangong Jingnu was dangerous. Agula took a step back and removed herself from the heat of Jingnu’s hand on her face, and her skin immediately felt bereft of warmth.
“Qi . . .?” Jingnu prompted, her head tipping to the side. Her black hair was slightly ruffled from the scuffle. She had to look up slightly to meet Agula’s eyes, and Agula suddenly remembered that her face was exposed. She pursed her lips and looked away, trying to keep the conflict she felt hidden.
Agula’s ears felt hot. “Qi . . . Yan,” she finished lamely.
“Qi Yan, thank you for your help.” Although it clearly caused her great discomfort to move the sprained wrist, Jingnu brought her hands together and gave a slight bow of her head. “I don’t know your circumstances and won’t ask.” Her gaze darted down to Agula’s clothes; Agula was outfitted for stealth and combat. “But I do intend to thank you properly.”

After thirteen years in the Burial Mounds, the Yiling Patriarch finally makes a public reappearance. Civilians are scared. Cultivators are outraged. Sect Leaders are concerned. Wei Wuxian has been too quiet, they say, and nobody knows what dark horrors the Burial Mounds may now contain.
Wei Wuxian wouldn't quite call them dark horrors, but the description wasn't too far off.
(tl;dr Wei Wuxian lives, raises a whole gaggle of demonic cultivator children, and the cultivation world panics.)

Summary
It's common knowledge in the Heavens that gods are not supposed to interact with humans outside of answering prayers, and they're definitely not supposed to show up in person and talk to a child. But Xie Lian isn't afraid of breaking rules that he's already broken, so he does it anyway. In fact, he takes it one step further and brings the child home.
Basically, Wei Wuxian's parents died in a night hunt when he was five, but he ends up being adopted a year later by a god and his ghost king husband, so it's not all bad.... In fact, it's probably better than it should be.
(Welcome to one of the rare times I try to avoid angst as much as possible. Wei Wuxian deserves happiness and I will give it to him.)
