Summary
The first thing Wei Ying became aware of was cold steel at his throat.
Not one blade—several.
He did not move.Sleep still clung to him, heavy and disorienting, but instinct burned through it fast enough. His eyes cracked open to darkness cut by lantern light, and beyond it, the rigid silhouettes of Gusu Lan disciples. White robes. Swords steady. Not trembling.
Not a mistake, then.Wei Ying let out a slow breath, careful not to shift against the edge pressing lightly into his skin. “Well,” he said, voice rough with sleep, “this is a new way to wake up.”
No one laughed.
That, more than the swords, told him something was very wrong.“You will come with us,” one disciple said. Young. Formal. Afraid—but hiding it well. “You are to be detained and questioned.”
“Questioned?” Wei Ying echoed. His mind raced, sifting through the previous day. Punishments—yes. Lan Wangji standing over him like a silent judge. Copying rules until his wrist ached. Kneeling until his legs went numb. Nothing new, nothing unusual, nothing that should end with… this.
He frowned. “Did I break a new rule I haven’t heard of yet?”

Summary
Modern cultivator, Wei Wuxian, dies in a train crash and is sent back in time to the period of Ancient China he had been writing his thesis on - transmigrated into his own body as a child, dying on the streets of Yiling. He has no money, no family, but a knowledge of modern cultivation and of the historical events that are about to unfold.
He recalls the recently-unearthed journal of a woman who was imprisoned in Cloud Recesses against her will, and decides that she’s a good place to start to find someone who might be willing to help him dismantle the corruption that had sent the Cultivation World into the Dark Ages so long ago.
Of course, he had no idea that the person he sought would be the mother of Hanguang-Jun, the object of Wei Wuxian's fascination (“obsession,” his friend had corrected), since he had first learned of his existence in the ancient texts he'd studied.

Summary
“I want you to leave.”
Wei Ying stared. He didn't understand the sentence at first. His mind snagged on it, unable—or unwilling—to make it mean what it clearly meant.
“What?”
“Leave Cloud Recesses.”
“You’re not serious,” Wei Ying said, a laugh bubbling up, thin and wrong. “Lan Zhan, don’t—don’t talk nonsense.”
“Leave.”
“Are you casting me out?” Wei Ying asked, disbelief lacing every syllable.
“You hurt her,” Lan Zhan said. “You hurt me. You will leave tonight.”
Or the one where Wei Ying keeps a secret to protect their daughter, Lan Zhan discovers it too late, and it fractures their marriage, their family, and a trust that took two lifetimes to rebuild.

Summary
Xie Lian remembered that there had been a time where rules felt like cliffs.
A time when every misstep seemed to confirm that fate was waiting for him to fail again and again. He had learned to move carefully then, to weigh every action against consequence, to measure compassion against catastrophe.
Fear had settled into his bones so thoroughly that even small choices had begun to feel dangerous.
Hua Cheng dismantled that fear piece by piece.
For years, his husband had encouraged every impulse, every reckless kindness, every softhearted detour that caught Xie Lian’s attention. If Xie Lian wanted to rebuild a ruined hut in the middle of the night, Hua Cheng brought lanterns and timber. If he wanted to cross a mountain to deliver a single lucky talisman, Hua Cheng walked beside him with amused devotion.
Rules had always existed, of course but Hua Cheng simply regarded them as suggestions.
or: Xie Lian ascends as a deity of motherhood and children- and dealing with heaven isn't so bad when you have a ghost king for a husband, and a god for a son.
