And when he’s alone, when Sam’s gone, or he’s lying in bed… no matter how hard he tries to avoid it, every time he closes his eyes Dean keeps flashing back to that last, horrific moment—Cas smiling as he’s consumed by darkness. “You changed me,” and “I love you,” and “goodbye.” He tries to reconcile it in his head, Cas loving him so much that just expressing it was enough to trigger his deal. He tries—and fails. He must have missed a step, lost in the grief and horror of the moment, because it just… it can’t be real. Every time he tries to take it out and examine it, his mind shies away, throwing up an impenetrable wall of “impossible.”
In the weeks following Chuck's defeat, Dean tries to come to terms with Cas's confession and death. But having your kid become god turns out to have some perks.

It wasn’t like that anymore. He and Eliot weren’t-- they didn’t. Because Quentin was with Alice. And being with Alice, the way they were now-- it made sense, for Quentin. Or, it had made sense, when there was the Monster, and Quentin hadn’t thought there was a possibility with Eliot, even if-- even when they got him back.
In a weird way, it had made even more sense once Eliot came back (thank God thank God thank God) and revealed that, guess what, he did want Quentin after all. Because Quentin always wanted too much from the people and things he loved, from Alice to Eliot to Fillory; how many times did he have to learn that lesson? And after-- after-- everything, fuck-- these last six months. Maybe it was time to accept what Eliot had always known, even if he’d forgotten a little, understandably, after being trapped alone inside a monster for so long: that no one would choose to sign up for fifty years of tending to the gaping black hole inside Quentin.
And then came that night, last month.

She had on leather boots that went up to her thighs over leather leggings, and a long, drapey-- Renaissance Fair-style (Fillorian, she hissed inside, you know it’s Fillorian) blouse. Her thick black hair was pushed back over one shoulder and her eyes--
“Holy shit,” the girl-- woman-- said under her breath, her mouth curling into an uncanny almost-grin, as Alice stared like an idiot.
“Alice Quinn,” she said suddenly, straightening up to her full height-- taller than Alice. “I’m Quentin Coldwater’s daughter from the future,” she said, like she’d rehearsed it-- that was the easier part for Alice to focus on, the delivery. “And I need you to help me save my family.”
Or: Alice saves Queliot, and saves the world. And just maybe figures out who she's always been.

The corners of Penny’s mouth went up, but it would have been a stretch to call the expression a smile. “No, you’re really not."
The Monster's been defeated, Quentin is dead, and Eliot has a quest of his own--if he can trust himself to complete it. An Orpheus and Eurydice remix.
