Aaron wasn’t sure how best to support Robert, through his night terrors. Aaron’s had always felt so violent, Aaron thrown awake by memories he’d much rather forget, memories that left him panting, panicking. Roberts were a quiet sort of terror, punctuated by barely audible whimpers and begging pleas, Robert curled in on himself, having clearly learned to suffer quietly, in the years he was inside, no one coming to cradle him back to sleep in the way Robert had for Aaron, all those years ago.

Robert smiles at the memory. For their first and only Christmas together in the downstairs flat, when they’d had both Seb and Liv and everything was perfect, they’d opened the presents sitting at the foot of the tree. They’d bathed in a sea of wrapping paper and boxes - Robert hadn’t had a lot of self control when it came to gifts - while watching Seb play with his new toys and Liv show off the pricey boots she’d been begging for for months.
Now, there’s only a handful of presents under the tree. It looks a little bare, and Robert’s heart aches a little as they sit down, but quickly shakes himself out of it; today is a happy day, and he’ll make sure it stays that way.

“My point is,” Aaron pointedly ignored his comment. “Christmas is never perfect. Right? We’ll open presents in the morning, and we’ll go to my mum’s for dinner, with Vic and Harry, and mum’ll burn the turkey, and Liam is going to get too drunk and do something weird, because he is weird. But we’ll come home, the three of us, and we’ll put a movie on, and you’ll let Seb eat his entire selection box in one go, because you’re an absolute soft touch, and it will have been perfect because we’re getting to spend Christmas together as a family for the first time.”
Maybe - just maybe - Robert is being a little obsessive about their first Christmas with Seb. And maybe - just maybe - Aaron fixes it.
