To celebrate the tournament at Ashford, King Daeron announces that the winner will marry an omegan prince, and sends Aerion hoping that someone will deign to free them from this demon incarnate.
To save his son, Maekar takes his place.
To his dismay, everything indicates that the winner will be an unknown hedge knight who doesn't even have enough manners to take off his helm when talking to them.
To make matters worse, his prince brother, Baelor, keeps vanishing somewhere, as if his fate is of no concern to him.

“My pup, where are they?”
“I'm sure they are with Mother above…” Daeron managed to say between kisses Valarr placed with wrath on his neck. “When my Lady Mother died, The High Septon said-”
“Where is my pup, Daeron?” Valarr’s brown and purple eyes turned dark. “The one you conceived for me.”
Daeron dared to smile, but Valarr could see the fear on his lilac eyes.
