Rhodey doesn’t know what the hell to think, and Tony doesn’t give him any reason to stop as time moves on. The kid is always there, and he starts showing up at family dinners, Rhodey meets his aunt, and they actually pick him up from school a couple times when Happy gets sick. Rhodey pays close attention and no, Tony doesn’t treat any of the other interns like this, and Rhodey has to accept what his head has been trying to tell him all along. “Christ, Tony,” Happy says, as Tony slides in beside Peter. “He’s taking after you. Now I’ve got two of you to worry about.”
Tony shakes his head at Peter, and Peter puts on the biggest smile he can manage, in hopes to get out of any of this finding its way to May. Which it inevitably will, since there were cameras, but he’s an expert in putting off the inevitable.
“Yeah,” Tony says. “Don’t I know it.”

There’s silence, and then he hears someone clear their throat. It sounds familiar.
“Uh, Tony,” Peter’s voice says. From….somewhere. Tony doesn’t see him, despite looking around. “Don’t freak out. Just. I’m saying that preemptively. Don’t. You’ll want to, but don’t.”
That’s never something Tony wants to hear, especially coming from the kid. Tony walks over close to where his voice is coming from, looking around, afraid of the state he’s gonna find him in. “Okay...can’t promise anything, but you know that. What have you done now? Don’t tell me you went back to that taco place. They said they’d sue you, Pete.”
Where the hell is he? Tony hears his feet shifting on the ground but he doesn’t see him anywhere.
“Nope,” Peter says. “Uh, no, it’s not—it’s not that.”

“Boss, Peter Parker’s heart has stopped.”
Tony spits out his coffee. “What? Friday? Repeat?”
She’s still just as deadpan as before. “Peter Parker’s heart has stopped, as reported by his in-suit AI, Karen.”
“What the fuck?” Tony chokes, stumbling out of his seat. The chair topples over behind him, hitting the floor with a loud crack, and Tony tries to catch his breath. “Like, you’re talking directly to Karen or you’re reading diagnostics from Karen?” His mouth is dry and his hands are shaking, and he’s already heading for the door.
“Diagnostics,” Friday says. “Karen is unresponsive.”
Tony activates his earpiece and nearly trips over his own feet. “Fri, call him, push through a call to Peter, just, just—push it through, don’t wait for him to answer.”
