Summary
He'd miscalculated—the tree limb had not been able to hold his weight, a fact that Paul had realized the moment the branch snapped underneath him and sent him tumbling to the hard ground below.
The fall could have been worse. As it was, Paul had only sprained his wrist, but that still presented another problem: he had been forbidden from climbing these particular trees in the first place, for this exact reason. They were old, gnarled things, unsafe and ill-suited for climbing, according to Gurney Halleck, but the Warmaster was rather old and gnarled himself and Paul had thought his observation mistaken.
---
Pre-canon. Paul gets hurt climbing trees and decides to hide in the forest to avoid getting into trouble. Meanwhile, Leto, Jessica, and the rest of Castle Caladan is in an uproar looking for the young ducal heir.

Summary
"No," says Jessica. "No, I was only swimming."
"This entire time?" The duke presses the back of his hand to her forehead. He is checking her temperature—checking for fever.
Swallowing, Jessica raises her arm and points to her island, the size of a thumbnail in the distance. Out of the corner of her eye she sees the duke's men pause and follow her gesture.
"Goddamn," says Gurney Halleck.
Duke Leto laughs in disbelief, though there is no humor in his voice, only incredulity. "There—you swam all the way there? God! Why? You could have—there was no one here to—"
Jessica stares at the duke for long moment. She considers the worry that lines his face, how absolutely frazzled he appears. She decides to tell him the truth.
"Because I could," she says, earnestly. "Because I wanted to, more than anything." She does not say: I have not wanted before Caladan. I was not taught to want.

Pre-Canon. Jessica loves the planet Caladan. She might also love its duke.Bookmarked by cows_read

Summary
"I would like to have a picnic in the gardens," Paul declared.
Jessica said, "Well, of course we can have a picnic."
With a child's forthrightness, her son shook his head, his dark curls bouncing, and replied, "No, Mother. I would like to have a picnic by myself."
"Oh! I see!" She was unexpectedly stung by this small rejection. Her son was not too old to ask to be carried here and there, or to be tucked into bed, but lately he had become more independent in other ways. This was clearly one such way. "Yes, that can be arranged."

Pre-Canon. Jessica keeps an eye on Paul as he has a picnic.

Summary
"Mama's dying!" Paul's entire body heaved as he sobbed. "She's been poisoned!"
Poison? When would she have been poisoned? A trained Sister of the Bene Gesserit could identify a poison within her body, slow her metabolism to stymie its effects, and then neutralize it—all within seconds! All without anyone else knowing what had occurred! She would teach the skill to Paul when he was old enough. But his statement now bewildered her just as much as it clearly bewildered Leto, who gave her a searching look, as though attempting to see if there were truly toxins flowing in her bloodstream.
Jessica cupped either side of Paul's face with her hands. "I haven't been poisoned, Paul. I'm perfectly fine! Look at me—don't I seem well?"
Their son rubbed at his eyes with a chubby fist. "But you—you ate the blackberries without testing them with the poison-snooper."
---
Pre-canon, Jessica POV. Paul misinterprets his lesson about poison-snoopers.

Summary
"Hello, Gurney!" said Paul. "Would you like to join us for tea?" His hand hovered near the sugar tongs.
At another time, he would have accepted. The heir to a Great House needed an education beyond war—deportment and courtesy were important parts of politicking. But he was here for another matter entirely. Gurney squared his shoulders. He said, "Paul, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer me honestly."
The boy nodded.
"Did you put sand in my bed?"
Paul nodded once more and said, proudly, "Yes!"
---
Pre-canon, Gurney POV. When he finds sand in his bed, Gurney knows just who the culprit is.
