    Summary

“I never thought I’d do this again,” Isobel admits after a moment, tugging at the heavy neck of Aylin’s mail. “I think I’ve forgotten just how many pieces there are.”

Aylin laughs and she sits back, pulling the chain shirt over her head as if it were made of cotton. “Take all the time you need. We have so much of it now.”

Time. There was supposed to be near enough an eternity of it before.

She cups Aylin’s cheeks, makes a memory of how she melts just that little bit into her touch.

They’d whispered such promises between these very walls so many times, enough that the weight of Isobel’s own mortality seemed to flit further away with every kiss.

What force could possibly break them apart? Fight past Selûne's own sword and shatter this happiness?

Bile rises in Isobel’s throat, her fingers firm against her face as she presses their foreheads together. It’s another familiar gesture, the touch so delicate but the words behind it clear.

Nothing will take you from me again.

Aylin and Isobel take some time to themselves following Ketheric's death.

    Summary

You had your body and I had mine, and it was a miracle. Your hands against my face were a miracle. The rest of your meat attached to your hands was a prayer answered and a promise broken, but we were flush and gasping and alive, and Harrow—I really thought you might’ve kissed me then.

But I felt it happen. The way your breath suddenly stilled, and your body locked up beneath mine, remembering. How with splintering gentleness, you pushed me away.

“I’m so sorry,” was the second thing you said upon waking.

The first thing had been my name.

Stranded in a safehouse on an Edenite moon, Gideon and Harrow try to put themselves back together.

    Summary

Gideon no longer tried to hide herself or her blatant staring. Sometimes Harrow looked back, but mostly she averted her gaze in apparent disinterest. It infuriated Gideon. Years and years of snide comments, of telling on her for every misstep, of pretending to hold the moral high ground as she spit on Gideon, and she didn’t have the decency to give her the time of day. The next week, Gideon executed her plan. The barrier between them was as wide as a science building hallway and Gideon cleared it in four steps.

    Summary

She got ready for work without turning any of the lights on, trying to move her head as little as possible. This was an unfortunately common routine for Gideon, who thought it was very possible that banging her head full force into a concrete wall until she passed out would hurt less. Harrow had told her that, in her clinical opinion, it probably wouldn’t.
