What if she went after Lord Debling? It would be bold, to be sure, and would perhaps signal more desperation than she would like, but at this point what did she have to lose? She imagined the worst case is that she would stumble upon Lord Debling and Penelope together, embracing as two newly engaged people were wont to do. Perhaps they would laugh at her, pity her, for scrambling after him like a dog begging for scraps. But even desperation can peak and tumble into something worth risking.
