    Summary

"Something wrong, Arun?" Louis asks, voice perfectly pleasant. Without deigning to reply, Armand very slowly turns his head away from the screen, gazing down at where the files are supposed to be.

Glassy black eyes gaze back at him, peering out curiously from a furry orange face. Armand lets go of her--of it--like he's been burned, holding his hands firmly in his lap.

“It’s a miracle you’ve survived for so long,” Louis murmurs. He flicks his thumb back and forth over the tip of Armand’s fang, back and forth again. “Can these even pierce through skin? They feel awfully blunt to me.”

    Summary

And then, a slow spotlight on the moment after the blood is cleaned up and Armand’s skin has stitched itself back together:

“I disgust you,” Armand says. Two fingers tracing patterns into the skin of Louis’s chest, right where the sob wants to break free but can’t, won’t, will not.

“No,” he says, which isn’t strictly true. Armand disgusts him plenty. Sometimes he can’t bear to look at him at all, the way it burns in his chest, the way he can smell the ash of flesh and then wood, how he can only sometimes pretend it’s about New Orleans. Armand disgusts him when he treats him like a child, when he brings up the coven, when he says yes, Maître instead of engaging, suddenly too good for a fight. And yet he never disgusts him like this. Bloody and bruised, Louis is only disgusted with himself.
