Summary
After the deeply questionable experience of reincarnation, Yara came to one conclusion rather quickly. In the world of One Piece, a medical education was far more useful for forging licenses than for practicing legally.
At first, life as an underground doctor had seemed almost ideal. Quiet work. Good money. Minimal attention.
She treated pirates, smugglers, fugitives, and, on occasion, complete lunatics held together by stubbornness, poor impulse control, and what could generously be called luck. They paid well, rarely complained, and, most importantly, knew better than to ask unnecessary questions.
Yara extended them the same courtesy.
It was a simple arrangement: patch them up, take the money, stay out of their business, and keep as far away as possible from anything that smelled remotely like world-shaking conflicts or plot-induced insanity.
Honestly, it was a solid plan. Relatively safe, too.
At least until she discovered that world-famous maniacs apparently possessed an uncanny instinct for tracking down people with questionable reputations.
Seriously, fuck them all.

"After you're done with everything here on this island. Would you like to maybe– join our crew? For real this time." His eyes light up.
"I don't think I’ll make it before you leave–" You look away, not bearing to face his piercing stare anymore.
"I can wait," he interrupts, letting go of your hand as quickly as he took it. "I mean, uhh... me and the crew... we can wait for you," he grins cheekily. "This place seems pretty cool. I wouldn't mind staying here for a few more days."
"We'll see," you softly chuckle in an attempt to hide your blank eyes. "I mean, who else is supposed to save you when you're halfway beaten to death?"
Hearing his half-hearted laugh sent a striking pain through your chest. You swallow hard to keep a sob from escaping your throat as you realise this might be the last time you ever hear it. Tears roll down your cheeks, blurring your vision as you lock eyes with the freckled man you've been dreaming about for the past months.
The familiar warmth tingles on your skin as he gently cups your face, his thumb carefully wiping away the tears on your cheek. Without breaking your gaze, Ace whispers, "I don't want to be saved by anybody else, y/n."
