Ilya had told Shane to leave because they needed space - they needed some room to catch their breath so they could talk about things properly. So they could say sorry and fix the mess they had made. But one day apart stretched into two, into three, into a week, and suddenly Shane was on the other end of the phone, saying, ”Maybe this isn’t going to work, Ilya.”
At least Ilya is good at that part; he’s an expert in being left behind.
(Or, Ilya and Shane breakup. Then the Centaurs’ plane almost crashes.)

"Shane?" It's his mum. "Sweetie, I've been trying to reach you since the match ended—"
"Not now, mum. Sorry. I can't—" He can't listen to her telling him his form was faulty, nor can he listen to her ask him if he's okay. He's not. She's seen him breakdown in front of her the first few weeks after the breakup. She knows he's not, she should know he's not. She can stop asking now.
"No, Shane, wait. I— have you, um, checked the news? Anything?"
"Not really—" Shane replies as they get in the car, because, really, he hasn't.
"The plane the Centaurs were on has—"
"Oh, they— they've told me," Shane whispers.
"Did you know Ilya still has David as his emergency contact?"

“You want to talk to people about me?” Shane asked quietly.
There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.
“Well I would,” he sneered, “if there was anything about you that was fucking interesting to talk about! It would be nice to not be so fucking bored and miserable!”
The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.
Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.
Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.

What if Shane and Ilya don't make up so easily after the Boxing Day fight? The Centaur's plane never malfunctions, so Shane never proposes. Instead, Ilya gives him an ultimatum on coming out and going public. It backfires spectacularly.

“You can also do reading about love?” Ilya asks, his voice slightly less self-assured than before.
“Of course. Let me shuffle a bit more… Hm. You are in love, correct?”
“Well… I think so, yes.”
Shane almost loses his breath. Has Ilya met someone? He can’t already be in love with the blonde from the club, can he? Or is this about that Svetlana girl he mentioned?
“You think so?” Madam Lucille sounds slightly amused.
“It is complicated.”
“Oh dear, love is never complicated. It’s the simplest feeling in the world.”

OR: At a fundraiser event they both attend, Ilya gets a tarot reading while Shane eavesdrops. Then they drive together, alone for the first time since the tuna meltdown. Basically, there's a lot of angst.
