The realization hit him like a freight train, and he wasn’t fast enough to tell Rei to stop, to force the words back into his mouth so they weren’t spoken into existence, as if maybe the truth could be forestalled for another time, another day, when Kaoru was prepared, but his plea came too late.
“...attending my omiai.”
Kaoru’s mind went white.

Fifteen days.
That was what the calendar on Kaoru’s phone said when it was finally back in his hands. He had been wandering in a godforsaken desert, cut off from the rest of the world, for fifteen days.~~~~~~~
In which Kaoru forgets to tell the rest of UNDEAD that they did, in fact, manage to squeak their way into the second half of the SS Qualifying round. And now it may be too late to make good on their win.

He doesn’t even have to hesitate with his response. His younger self might’ve thrown himself in the ocean at the mere thought of admitting such a thing. But Kaoru is older and wiser and able to accept what he's feeling now. “I do.”

Summary
This isn’t the first time Ratio has walked in on Aventurine and a scene of violence. He acts unashamed of the aftermath, but he never lets anyone see him in the process. One is a flaunt of his own prowess: Look at me, look what I’m capable of, look what I survived again. The other is a kind of honesty he’s not sure Aventurine is capable of.
