Once upon a time, a depressed teen from Brooklyn fell down a well and befriended the lonely prince of a dark empire. And as far as Luigi is concerned, the story ends there. Bowser doesn't recognize him at all and he could not be more over his goth phase.
Then they get trapped in a cave-in together, and Bowser starts acting a little too familiar.

“No, Luddy, you have to turn here.” Wendy tells her older brother, pointing at the alley on the screen. “That’s where the next teleporter is.”
“Why isn’t it on the map?” Ludwig scrunches his nose up, but he turns where Wendy had pointed. “Ugh, this place is gross.”
There’s absolute silence as Ludwig makes his way to the glowing circle on the ground, but before he reaches it, something jumps out at him and he shrieks.
Wendy and Lemmy burst into giggles on each side of him, Roy and Morton are roaring with laughter in the corner. Ludwig frantically pushes buttons to get the thing off of him.

He's one half of the new rainbow-hued, star-studded heroes of Brooklyn, after all! If they've defeated a giant monster turtle from another world, they can handle one family dinner where the spotlight's on them.
