“Your Major Stirling believes a third of the men will die tomorrow,” Augustin repeats, sombre but not unkind. “You do not want me to die.”
“You sound very sure of yourself, Lieutenant Jordan,” Paddy hisses, stalking towards the bed. “Shall I give you a little motivation? Shall I take aim at Sargent Essner and we will see where you land in the dirt again.”
Augustin is undeterred. Unafraid. Paddy can see it, that crystalline resolve as he slowly stands, so close that Paddy can smell petrol and tobacco streaming off him.
“On the first day of training, I could’ve killed you in return,” Augustin says, his voice even and soft. Through a plume of smoke, he adds, “Both of us are still breathing.”
