    Summary

“I’m- I can’t convince myself to commit to a longer stay,” Robby admits, frustrated by it. “It’d be better for actually getting somewhere with antidepressants, I know, but I feel like once I take away the work and the bike and everything else I do… there’s a clock on how long I can be naked like that. When it runs out, if I’m not back on the right side, I’ll get stuck as nothing, forever.” Robby drops his face into his hand. “Why does this sound like The Little Mermaid?” he moans.

“Is this the kind of place where they throw a black bag over your head and smash your SIM card, or can I still talk to you?” Jack asks.

~After a scare on his road trip, Robby does two weeks of inpatient care in Wisconsin... and you'll never guess who he uses his phone time on~

Truth be told, it’s Robby who can’t stand to be away any longer than he has to be. His mind is made up, and now he just needs to make the rest of himself presentable. He flies through the motions of a shower, a shave, and an extra tooth brushing before he realizes the rather aromatic floral arrangement on the bathroom counter is not a fixture placed by the hotel. It’s soaking in a Yeti rambler. A pair of handsome sunflowers set in eucalyptus sprigs, wrapped in gilded edged paper with a little card to match.

    Summary

After a difficult day at the Pitt where they had to navigate another major catastrophe, Robby finds Jack on the roof on the right side of the railing, but with an ultimatum that knocks the wind out of his sails. Robby has to work out what he can do to stop the one thing that really matters to him from derailing.

“I can’t keep doing this…” Jack says quietly.

    “Doing what?”

The night shift attending makes a small, tired motion between them, one finger wagging vaguely in the cold air. “This. It’s not fair man.”

Robby stares up at the stars. For years he has become accustomed to uncertainty. Emergency medicine teaches you to live with incomplete information and to make decisions without guarantees. This feels infinitely harder, because there’s no protocol for it, no correct answer, it’s not an exact science.
    It’s Jack Abbot.

    Summary

The apartment is dark and Robby is squinting in the weak light that spills in from the hallway, mouth slack, cheeks pink, clearly just awoken from sleep. He is wearing a plaid flannel bathrobe, the white fleece lining the inside of the collar lumpy and matted from being washed too many times. The robe hangs open, revealing Robby’s hairy chest and the pale curve of his belly, his dark-colored boxer shorts.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Robby says archly, “if I were well-adjusted I’d listen to the police scanner for fun.”
“At least shit happens on that,” Jack counters.
“Exactly!” Robby says. “Aren’t you tired of shit happening? Don’t you want to relax, secure in the knowledge that they’ll never actually find Bigfoot?”
That’s actually a good point, though Jack will never admit it to Robby.

    Summary

“Look at you. Doing just what you were bred for, aren’t you, pup?”

Whitaker whines happily, throat deliciously sore. He loves the thought - some dogs were bred to hunt game, some were bred to guard livestock, he was bred to take Jack Abbot’s cock.

“Should we take a picture for your owner before we get you cleaned up?”

    “Ruff!"

    ****

Robby needs a dog sitter - he’d hate to leave his sweet pup Huckleberry all alone during his shift. Thank goodness Jack Abbot’s available.

“Hi,” Robby murmurs, standing close enough to make his intentions known.
Jack gives him a soft chuckle. “Hi.”
Robby leans in, nose nearly touching Jack’s. “Is it…inappropriate to kiss the dog sitter?”
“If that’s inappropriate then we’ve got way bigger problems,” Jack replies, closing the gap.
They kiss, and Whitaker crosses his arms on the back of the couch and rests his head on them. Robby’s hand fits perfectly on the back of Jack’s neck, Jack’s hand sits on Robby’s hip like it’s done it a million times. He’s obsessed with watching everything Robby and Jack do - he can never decide if he feels like an absolute pervert watching a live porn made just for him, or a field scientist carefully observing and documenting the behavior of a new species of finch.

Robby says nothing, does nothing. But his skin is warm, and his chest rises and falls, and Jack feels himself choke on every confusing, conflicted feeling he’s had in the last several hours.
