An audience filled with wet women and hard men, all doing their best to pretend they weren’t aware of the musky scent suffocating the room–pressing their desires not only towards one another, but into the harlequin onstage. He felt the carnality of it. He grinned as men shifted uncomfortably in their tight pants, their confusion passing through his head without his approval. They thought he was painted like a whore, and maybe he was, but weren’t they the ones paying for him?

It wasn't the torture that broke Vax, no, it was the faces of the dead that he kept seeing.
After the Clasp finds him and tortures him, he's left broken in a way he doesn't understand. He keeps seeing them... and he stops talking, he stops living.
Quietly, subtly, Percy begins to help Vax in any way he can. He doesn't expect Vax to talk, he doesn't expect anything.
He tells Vax to take his time because he'll be there, even if Vax never talks again.
