The letter is from the mayor, which doesn’t immediately raise any alarm bells. He’s always sending out reminders for local events or random requests for assistance, so Ryan opens it without much thought.
Andrew’s curling handwriting announces: Dear Ryan, I would like to give you some information about an upcoming event: the Feast of the Winter Star. It’s a time for the community to come together and think back on all the good fortune we’ve had this year. A favorite tradition is the “secret gift exchange”, where everyone in town is randomly assigned to someone else. This year, your secret friend is: Shane. Don’t tell anyone! The feast will take place on the 25th at the town square. See you then! - Mayor Ilnyckyj
“Oh,” Ryan says thoughtfully. “That sounds like fun!” And then, he rereads the part that says: This year, your secret friend is: Shane, and everything comes to a screeching halt.
He looks down at his cat, who is calmly cleaning his paw. “Goldsworth, I think I might be in some deep shit.”
Or, Ryan, humble farmer, gets assigned the local hot doctor for the Winter Star gift exchange, and it goes about as well as you'd expect (poorly)

Summary
“Evening,” Shane says, though it’s leaning closer to midnight than to dinnertime. “Heard from my deputy that somethin’ was afoot down here.”
TJ carefully tips his head, gesturing at the table of men. “They rolled in about an hour ago. It took me until now to recognize them—Bergara and his boys.”
Shane looks at the table again, and this time, one of the men is looking back. Even across the room, his eyes are fierce and devastating to gaze upon, like taking a pair of bullets to the gut. Messy black hair escapes the brim of his hat, brushing the top of a long, vivid scar that runs from forehead to cheek over his right eye, and the expression on his handsome face is as arrogant as it is enticing, like he’s inviting anyone who seeks him out to start a fistfight and end it with a good, hard fuck. Shane would know that face anywhere, and has seen it on more WANTED posters than he could ever hope to count.
Or, Shane is the sheriff of a town that infamous bounty hunter-disguised-criminal Ryan Bergara has set his sights on, and will do whatever it takes to keep Bergara from burning it to the ground

“If you guys want, you can come over to my house. We have a studio out back that I use to write music in. You can dazzle me with some of Sunset Curve’s greatest hits.”

Shane’s eyes trail slowly over Ryan’s bare chest and legs, catching on his tight briefs. They’re tight enough that Shane can definitely see the outline of Ryan’s hardening cock through them, and this makes his eyes darken further, makes Ryan want to squirm and thrash and beg for Shane to come touch him.

“Well,” Ryan continues, “it’s a dubious announcement, not a rad one. I really don’t know how to go about this without bringing the house down. I don’t want to alarm you all on this tranquil Thursday night.”
Eugene points out, “It’s the week before midterms, dude. Peace is nonexistent.”
Ryan considers this for a long moment. “You make a stellar point, my stellar bro. Okay, here goes: we believe, due to plenty of evidence and plenty of speculation and educational guessing, that Earth is about to be invaded by aliens. Specifically, right here at UCLA.”
Another silence falls in the kitchen, this one mildly confused. Eventually, when it grows to be unbearable, Steven clears his throat and asks: “Ryan, are you saying that you think aliens are going to invade our campus?”
“Very imminently,” he agrees.
Andrew turns his disbelieving stare from Ryan to the looming figure at his right. “And you’re on board with this claim, Pres 2?”
Shane states: “Most definitely, dudes. A villainous invasion is upon us.”
Or, frat presidents Ryan & Shane warn their brothers of a most heinous incoming alien invasion and chaos ensues

“We’ll be fine,” Ryan repeats, still brandishing his sandwich in a threatening manner. “Just wait and see. Our kids are going to come back and grow up to be botanists and environmental conservationists.”
Annie, the music teacher, rolls her eyes. “Your kids are going to come back with poison ivy and heat stroke.”
Andrew protests, “They’ll be wearing long clothes! Because it’ll be sixty degrees! Which rules out heat stroke!”
Curly, a kindergarten teacher, nods unconvincingly. “Yup, I bet. We’ll be holding our breaths.”
When they all part to resume classes, Andrew stops and tells Ryan, “Don’t listen to them, man. We’re gonna rock this shit, and our kids are going to beg us to take them hiking every week. We’re gonna rock this shit.”
“I know we are. We’ll show the others just how totally rad and down with the kids we are, and how we can positively influence their outlook on Earth Science.”
Or, Ryan and Andrew, two fifth grade teachers, decide to take their students to a nature center for a field trip and end up falling head over ass in love the the park rangers assigned to accompany them, which doesn't bode well for either of their professional credentials

Summary
Richie, Stan, and Bill laugh with each other as they progress through the quesadilla line and then head towards their usual table. The others are already there, eating and chatting, and when Richie spots Eddie, he’s suddenly slammed with the image of him dressed up in business clothes and giving Beverly’s camera a look that could bring grown men to their knees.
He keeps his promise to be cool about it all the way up until he takes his seat next to Eddie. Stan and Bill get sucked into the table’s conversation immediately, but Eddie is just hanging out and eating, so he’s free to turn to Richie and ask:
“Hey, how was your day?”
To which Richie responds with: “I got to see you in a wicked pair of business slacks, so it went pretty well. How was your day?”
Eddie opens his mouth, closes it, and then opens it again, so that he can yell: “You told Richie of all people?!” over at Beverly.
“Told him what?” Mike asks, confused, and Bev replies with: “It was an accident!”
Or, Beverly talks Eddie into being her long-term model for her Visual Thinking and Photography I classes, and Richie suffers

“Look,” Shane says abruptly, rocking up onto the balls of his feet. Ryan is standing on a stepladder in front of him, desperately trying to find the last box of coconut water that’s supposedly and allegedly located in the walk-in cooler. Shane’s pointing vaguely at the corner that he has been inspecting for the past minute and a half, in a way that does not lead Ryan to the coconut water’s whereabouts. “It’s right fucking there.”
Ryan, because he loves and trusts Shane, takes another look and still comes up empty. “All I see up here is whipped cream and some limes. There’s no coconut water in sight. I swear to sweet baby Jesus that there is no coconut water in this goddamn walk-in, Shane Madej.”
“I think there’s something to be said about using ‘sweet baby Jesus’ and ‘goddamn’ in the same sentence, but to each their own."

Ryan squints at him over his burrito. “Why?”
“Why does anyone go shopping for anything? I need and/or want one.”
“Jesus Christ—I get that you need to go shopping for a wedding dress, big guy. What I want to know is what you plan on using the dress for once you’ve obtained it.”
Shane supplies: “It’s for that project I told you we’re doing in Horror in American Film. The alternate recreation one.”
“Oh, yeah!” Ryan nods, remembering the project from when he took that class the previous year. “That’s what the wedding dress is for?”
“Of course. The Bride of Frankenstein can’t become a bride without a wedding dress, you godless man.”
Or, Shane convinces Ryan to go wedding dress shopping with him for a class project and fails to mention the bit where Ryan is supposed to try the dresses on as Andrew Ilnyckyj's placeholder. For science.

He looks up to find Shane grinning crookedly across the table. Ryan’s heart stutters at the sight of it, and then twists at the sight of Tyler’s unimpressed sneer, something Shane doesn’t notice at all.
“What?” he asks stupidly.
“We were talking about editing. Tyler does song covers on YouTube, and I was telling him about the little ghoul adventures we film and how quickly you can edit those videos. Supernaturally fast, if you will.”
“It’s ‘cause I gotta catch those ghouls and prove you wrong,” Ryan teases. “My entire purpose behind those videos is to prove you wrong.”
“Oh, I am perfectly aware, Mr. Bergara.”
Ryan goes to reply, a joke about Shane lacking The Sight ready to go, but Tyler beats him to the punch.
“I don’t believe in ghosts whatsoever. They’re total bullshit. I’m sure everything you guys hear on your, uh, ghoul adventures is nothing but the wind and animal sounds.”
Or, some tool from Shane's creative writing class accidentally throws his drink on Shane one day, decides to stick around afterwards, and turns Ryan's life into an episode of As The World Turns

There’s really no other way to ask it, Richie reasons with himself, and rolls with it. He knocks on Eddie’s forehead again, softer this time, and asks:
“When you get lost in your head. Where is it that you sneak off to?”
Eddie doesn’t say anything for a moment. They continue to walk towards his house, stepping over bumps in the sidewalk, stepping on cracks, and avoiding the half-eaten apple that has been in front of the Andersons’ house for three days in a row now. Richie thinks he’s not going to answer the question, or tell Richie to leave him alone, but then Eddie sighs and cranes his head back to look at the sky again.
“I don’t know exactly,” Eddie admits, voice hushed. “All I know is that it’s somewhere far away from here. Somewhere with a skyline and no walls.”
Or, the summer before senior year, Eddie keeps getting lost in his head and Richie keeps trying to find out where he goes

“Know what?” it hisses, close enough that Ryan can feel when it speaks, and then he turns around.
He turns around, looks up into those piercing eyes, and says: “I had to know why you didn’t kill me.”

Shane gets the call at 2:51 in the morning.
“‘Lo?”
“Madej, I need you here immediately.”
In some other lifetime, it would have taken Shane at least twenty minutes to wake up from a call like this. But after seven years of working at a hospital, he’s almost coherent by the time the call hits the ten second mark.
“What happened?” Shane asks, pushing himself up with a groan.
On the other end, there’s a slight pause, and then Quinta’s strained, tight voice tells him: “There was a fire.”
Or, Shane is an ER nurse who gets called in to help with the aftermath of a huge fire and discovers that no one knows what has happened to his firefighter partner.

“But I’d punch the fuck out of someone if they ever tried to hurt you. That’s brave, right?”
His boyfriend’s face softens, and he risks letting go of the wheel with one hand to give Ryan’s left bicep a nice, hard squeeze. “That’s real chivalrous of you, Hercules, but I was talking about being adventurously brave, not adrenaline-fueled brave.”
Or, shockingly, Ryan and Shane's sex life gets an upgrade because of a silly little argument they have one night in the car.
