Mike broke off here, his mind arriving at a horrendous blank.
He heard a quiet breath, maybe a sigh, maybe fabric that had brushed against the phone on Harvey's end.
"I just—" Mike blurted into the silence. "I'm just wondering..." He shut his eyes, an uncanny, calm fatalism settling over him. "I'm just wondering what you want me to do."
There was more silence from Harvey's end.
"You know what," Mike said rapidly, planning to say, I'm sorry I called, I'll figure it out.
"I'll send a car to come get you," Harvey said. "Be ready in ten minutes."

Stunning piece of work. It's upsettingly good. You know when you read something and you think to yourself "Welp. There's no point even trying." lmao It's depressing me. Writing quality so good I hate everything I've ever written! So good it is a PROBLEM. Just holding my head in my hands at the end of this, don't mind me. (Brutal ending, I am wrecked by the events inside the story, and meta textually too, you did not have to do me like that)
